Kenilworth Park: To be Restored

From 1942 until 1970, DC operated a landfill in the area that became Kenilworth Park. The municipal waste was burned openly, and most of the residents inhaling the toxic smoke were black and poor. In 1968, four boys were playing at the dump when the afternoon fires were set.

Seven-year-old Kelvin Tyrone Mock did not escape in time. The mayor stopped the fires and closed the landfill following Mock’s death, but its toxins and environmental justice challenges still linger until today.

Cameron Evans: A Mission to Save the Island

By Jing-ning Hsu & Sara Iagnemma

Since 1850, Tangier has lost two thirds of its land mass. By 2050, the island may be no longer inhabitable, forcing the 500 or so residents to leave their home. Tangier native Cameron Evans, who grew up hunting, crabbing and taking photos on the water, has witnessed the loss of his beloved land due to erosion and rising sea levels.

Yet, this is not a climate horror story. This is a story of a young man on a mission to save his homeland through advocacy and photography.

Podcasts

We examine the ways the destruction of the environment can lead to the destruction of culture. We speak with members of the Chesapeake Bay community working to preserve the waterways and the cultures that depend on them.

(In)vironmental Justice is hosted by Jing-Ning Hsu and Adam Esrig. Alejandra Puente also contributed to the production of the podcast. This episode is written, produced, and edited by Hannah Loder.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

STEM education has become increasingly important for all students in our rapidly changing world, but the public school system has failed to engage and prepare our youth, many of whom are low-income and minority students to succeed in these subjects.

In today’s episode of Just Future, we invited Lemond Brown and Dr. Heather Snell to talk about their work at the Swaliga Foundation to empower underserved youth in Ward 7 and 8 through STEAM education. How does hip pop music fulfill what’s missing in our current education system?
